Hay fever, AKA allergic rhinitis, you’re not alone!

It’s super common, affecting almost one in four, or 23.9%, Australians every year. Common complaints include a runny nose, sneezing, watery itchy eyes, fatigue and headaches.
In Spring, many people are inconvenienced with every day activities and going outside ruined by their runny nose and itchy eyes.
There are treatment options available - let us use acupuncture to help those pesky symptoms and get you back to work or play.
What is Hay Fever?
Hay fever is caused by an allergy response, which can occur seasonally or throughout the year. The responses often occur in Spring, triggered by allergens like pollen, dust or animals. This response creates inflammation in the respiratory system which leads to producing too much mucous and thus those symptoms in the eyes and nose that we all know, and don’t love.

Hay Fever in Chinese Medicine
Springtime allergies just stuff you around, right? In Traditional Chinese Medicine people are all viewed individually, with each person's body system assessed and treated to seek balance.
Hay fever can be caused by multiple different root causes, the most common being a lung or spleen qi deficiency, causing a weakness in respiratory system, which leaves people vulnerable to these allergen responses.
Acupuncture may alleviate hay fever by treating the root cause, reducing the allergic responses.
We can tailor a treatment to build your Qi and constitution. While we can also recommend lifestyle adjustments, dietary considerations, and patented herbal formulations to build your constitutional strength.
What does the Research say?
Research has shown that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for hay fever. A study conducted in 2022 by Gellrich et al., which was published in the scientific Journal, the European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, showed a reduction in symptoms for patients who had seasonal hay fever.
In this study 16 participants received acupuncture treatments with medication, 6 received sham acupuncture and 8 were treated with only the medication over an 8 week period. The group being given real acupuncture showed a significant reduction in symptoms. The team from this study concluded that this was likely due to acupuncture decreasing inflammation to the nasal passages.
As our style of massage emulates the same perspective and treatment style as acupuncture this research suggests that Tui Na massage could also be effective.
